Maafushi was one of those places in the Maldives that surprised me in a good way. Before visiting, I had mostly seen pictures of private resorts, overwater villas and empty beaches. Maafushi gave me a completely different picture of the Maldives.
It is a local island, so you get to see normal island life along with beautiful blue water, sandy beaches, guesthouses, restaurants and plenty of activities for tourists.
I visited Maafushi to experience the island for myself, and what I liked most was the convenience. I did not have to spend resort-level money to enjoy the sea, go snorkeling, take a boat trip or simply sit on the beach.
If you are planning a Maldives trip on a reasonable budget, Maafushi is definitely an island I would keep on your list.

My First Impression of Maafushi

When I first arrived in Maafushi, the biggest difference I noticed was that it did not feel like a typical luxury resort.
There were local houses, small streets, shops, restaurants, guesthouses and people going about their daily lives. At the same time, everywhere I looked I could see the beautiful Maldivian sea.
That combination is what made Maafushi interesting for me.
The island is not huge, so I found it quite easy to explore on foot. I didn’t feel like I needed a taxi or any complicated transport just to move around.
The Maafushi local council places the island in South Malé Atoll and describes it as an established local-tourism destination.
Maafushi Beach – My Experience
The beach was naturally one of the first places I wanted to see.
The water was clear and the colour changed depending on the sunlight, from light turquoise near the shore to deeper blue farther out.
I spent quite some time simply walking along the beach and watching the water. The atmosphere was much more relaxed than I expected.
But there is one thing I want to make clear to anyone visiting Maafushi for the first time.
This is a local Maldivian island, not a private resort island.
Because of local customs, visitors should not walk around the residential parts of the island wearing beachwear. Swimwear should be used at designated tourist beach areas.
Once I understood this, it was not difficult at all. I simply used the appropriate beach area for swimming and changed/covered up before walking around the island.
Maafushi Bikini Beach

The designated bikini beach is where most tourists will want to spend their beach time.
I found it much easier to relax there because it is intended for visitors and swimming.
If you are coming from a resort island, don’t expect Maafushi’s beach to feel exactly the same. There are buildings, boats and other signs of island life nearby.
Personally, I actually liked this because it made the experience feel less artificial.
If your dream is to have a completely empty beach with nobody around, Maafushi may not be the best choice.
But if you want a combination of beach + activities + restaurants + affordable accommodation, I think Maafushi works very well.
Swimming in Maafushi
I enjoyed spending time in the water, particularly when the sea was calm.
The shallow areas near the beach are pleasant, but as with any beach destination, conditions can change with weather, tides and waves.
I would recommend checking the local conditions before going far into the water.
For families with children, I would stay close to the shore and choose calmer conditions rather than assuming every part of the lagoon is equally safe.
Snorkeling Around Maafushi
For me, snorkeling was one of the best reasons to visit Maafushi.
Rather than expecting the best marine life directly beside the main beach, I recommend taking one of the local boat excursions.
There are several operators on the island offering snorkeling and reef trips.
During my visit, I found that the boat experience itself was almost as enjoyable as the snorkeling. Riding through the clear Maldivian water and stopping at different spots gave me a much better impression of the marine environment around the island.
Visibility can obviously change depending on the weather and sea conditions, so I would not judge the snorkeling experience from one particular day.
Sandbank Trip From Maafushi
If you have never visited a Maldivian sandbank before, I strongly recommend adding this to your trip.
I joined a boat excursion and the experience was exactly the kind of Maldives scene I had imagined before visiting.
A small strip of white sand surrounded by clear blue water feels completely different from sitting on a normal beach.
I enjoyed walking through the shallow water, taking photographs and simply spending time there.
The only downside is that popular sandbanks can become busy when several boats arrive at the same time.
If possible, ask your tour operator about quieter timings.
Dolphin Watching
Another activity I noticed being offered around Maafushi was dolphin watching.
I like these kinds of trips because you get to spend time on the ocean rather than just visiting another tourist attraction.
Of course, dolphins are wild animals, so nobody can promise you will see them.
If you do book a dolphin trip, I would treat the boat ride and sunset views as part of the experience rather than thinking only about whether dolphins appear.
Water Sports in Maafushi
Maafushi is a good choice if you get bored just sitting on the beach.
During my visit, I saw several options for water-based activities and excursions.
Depending on the operator and weather, visitors can find activities such as:
- Jet skiing
- Parasailing
- Kayaking
- Windsurfing
- Diving
- Snorkeling
- Fishing trips
- Dolphin cruises
- Sandbank excursions
I liked having so many options because I could decide what I wanted to do each day rather than booking everything before arriving.
Walking Around Maafushi

One thing I really enjoyed was simply walking around the island.
Maafushi is not only about beaches.
There are small shops, cafés, local homes, restaurants and streets where you can see everyday life.
This was one of the biggest differences compared with staying at a private resort.
At a resort, almost everything revolves around the visitor.
In Maafushi, tourists are part of an actual local community.
I personally found that more interesting.
Food in Maafushi
I had no problem finding food during my stay.
There are local restaurants as well as places designed more specifically for tourists.
I tried local-style food as well as familiar international dishes, so I never felt stuck with only one type of cuisine.
If you want to save money, don’t assume that every meal needs to be at a tourist-focused restaurant. Local cafés can be a good option.
I also recommend trying Maldivian dishes at least once rather than eating only the food you already know.
Where I Stayed in Maafushi
One of the biggest reasons I would recommend Maafushi to budget travelers is the accommodation choice.
Instead of having only expensive resort villas, the island has many guesthouses and hotels.
I found this particularly useful because I could spend more of my travel budget on experiences such as snorkeling, boat trips and excursions.
If you are choosing accommodation, I would check the walking distance to the beach, harbour and restaurants before booking.
For me, being able to walk almost everywhere was one of the best things about staying on the island.
How I Reached Maafushi
I arrived through Velana International Airport and continued toward Maafushi by boat.
The journey itself was not difficult.
A shared speedboat is generally the easiest option for tourists, while the public ferry is cheaper but slower.
The local council says Maafushi is around 27 km from Malé and can be reached by speedboat in roughly 40 minutes.
I would strongly recommend checking your boat timing before arriving at the airport.
This is particularly important if your flight lands late or if you are travelling on a day when ferry services are limited.
Is Maafushi Expensive?
Compared with staying at a private Maldives resort, I found Maafushi much more budget-friendly.
The biggest saving comes from accommodation.
You can stay in a guesthouse or local hotel and then spend money on the experiences that actually interest you.
For example, instead of paying for an expensive all-inclusive resort package, you can choose your own snorkeling trip, eat at local restaurants and decide which excursions you want.
That flexibility was one of my favourite things about Maafushi.
Is Maafushi Beach Good for Couples?
Yes.
I think Maafushi works especially well for couples who want to experience the Maldives without spending a huge amount.
I would recommend couples try:
- Sunset boat trips
- Sandbank excursions
- Snorkeling
- Dolphin watching
- Evening beach walks
- A nice dinner by the water
However, I would not choose Maafushi if your only goal is complete privacy.
For that kind of honeymoon experience, a private resort is probably a better choice.
Is Maafushi Good for Families?
I would say yes.
The island is relatively easy to explore, there are restaurants and hotels, and families have plenty of activities to choose from.
Parents should obviously keep an eye on children around the water and choose suitable swimming conditions.
I would also recommend selecting a hotel with family-friendly rooms and easy access to the beach.
What I Liked About Maafushi
These were the things that stood out to me during my visit:
- Affordable: I could enjoy the Maldives without paying luxury-resort prices.
- Easy to explore: I could walk around most of the island.
- Lots of activities: There was always something to do.
- Local atmosphere: I got to see a side of the Maldives that I would not experience at a private resort.
- Beautiful water: The lagoon and surrounding ocean were the highlight.
- Good choice for first-time visitors: It was easy to arrange accommodation, food and excursions.
What I Didn’t Like
- Maafushi is not perfect, and I don’t want to make this page sound like it is.
- The island can feel busy, especially around popular tourist areas.
- You will also see buildings and local activity around the beach, so don’t expect the untouched-island look you see in luxury resort advertisements.
- The beach experience also depends on weather and sea conditions.
- For me, these were not major problems, but they are worth knowing before you book.

Would I Visit Maafushi Again?
Yes, I would.
- The biggest reason is that Maafushi gave me a more complete Maldives experience.
- I got the beautiful water and beaches, but I also saw local life, ate at local restaurants, walked around the island and took part in activities.
- For someone visiting the Maldives for the first time and trying to control their budget, I think Maafushi is one of the easiest islands to recommend.
- If you are looking for a quiet luxury resort with a completely private beach, choose a resort island.
- But if you want beautiful beaches, activities, local life and reasonable accommodation in one place, I think Maafushi is worth visiting.

The Maldives is not only about expensive resorts and overwater villas. Maafushi showed me that you can experience clear blue water, beautiful beaches, snorkeling, sandbanks, local food and island life without spending a fortune.
It is not the most isolated or luxurious island in the country, but that is exactly why I enjoyed it.
